About

Our History

MAC Construction began as a startup company in 1980, providing site development and excavation services in Southern Indiana/Louisville Metro area. Under the direction of husband and wife team Jeannie and Victor Unruh, MAC grew exponentially by successfully bidding for government/municipal contracts. Vic’s strong oversight and attention to detail play a significant role in the company’s success. He achieved enormous growth in a short period by expanding construction capabilities and managing operations. Jeannie guided financial management of MAC from its start in 1980 until 2010. Her administrative strengths in personnel, finance, and overall management are crucial to the success of MAC Construction today.

MAC continued to reinvest in equipment and staff while improving civil construction methods and increasing project complexity. The second generation of leadership, Travis and Chad Unruh, began working at MAC in 2000 and 2001 as field staff, supervisors and superintendents after obtaining their engineering degrees from Purdue University. Today, Travis and Chad have taken ownership, operational and management control of the company rounding out a strong, experienced team of construction professionals poised for continued growth and expansion. Under this leadership, MAC’s constructed many of Southern Indiana and Louisville Metro’s most visible and ambitious projects.

MAC performs key portions of projects with its own construction forces and equipment, subcontracting only specialty trades, thus providing an extra element of control to ensure adherence schedules while never sacrificing safety or quality. In addition to controlling the majority of civil construction, MAC owns and operates its asphalt plant and fleet of trucks to supply its own needs, as well as the needs of outside contractors and customers.

MAC protects its customers by providing single point responsibility for large civil construction projects, thus eliminating coordination issues and disputes that occur in multi-contract projects.

Environment, Health & Safety

Safety is a core value at MAC Construction, with the true belief that zero incidents is achievable and expected. Our Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Program operates with dynamic, wide-ranging effort that encompasses all of the company’s civil construction and excavation services. A degreed safety professional manages the behavior-based program assuring all levels of our company are focused on environment, health, and safety.

EHS policies and procedures are regularly reviewed and updated. These procedures are used to complete site-specific programs that address job hazards that are unique to each job site. EHS policies require daily jobsite safety inspections by the site foreman and weekly audits by our EHS Director or staff. MAC performs root cause analysis for all near misses allowing us to communicate efficiently across all personnel such that it can be prevented in the future. It is the responsibility of each level of supervision to ensure that his or her employees understand their role in the safety of the project. Every employee of MAC has the authority to stop work should they observe a potential unsafe condition.

MAC’s management demonstrates their commitment to our EHS program through multi-level ongoing involvement and continued support. Management safety meetings are held regularly such that Safety issues are effectively communicated throughout the entire organization.

MAC’s EHS education is compulsory, addressing education at employee orientation, continual onsite workforce training and continuing education for employees, supervision and management. MAC utilizes specifically designed company training programs to educate our workforce. These programs are designed to address site-specific hazards such as fall protection, confined space, excavations and trench safety, management of traffic/flagging, First Aid/CPR, and manager development. These programs are offered at both the “User” and “Competent Person” level.

MAC’s management and supervisors are required to attend the 10-Hour OSHA Construction Industry Outreach Training Program. In addition, they receive safety-related training annually that includes substance abuse training, accident investigation, job task safety analysis and more. Our programs are progressive and focus on being proactive. Employees are educated and have accountability, and management is active and leads by action

Pre-planning is conducted to assess and abate unnecessary hazards. All employees are encouraged to participate, provide accurate reporting and to correct any deficiencies. At the same time, subcontractors are required to provide qualifying safety information prior to contracting directly with MAC.  These subcontractors are held to the same high standards assuring all employees on site may work safely and return home each evening.

Community

Since its beginnings, MAC Construction has been deeply involved in the community, and has ‘given back’ to the communities it serves in many ways – financially, as well as providing talented construction and volunteer services. The Unruh Family & management team have a long list of civic, industrial and organizational involvement in the area and continue encourage others within the organization to do the same. Both Vic and Chad are pilots and volunteer for Angel Flights, transporting many critically ill patients for medical treatment.

Most recently, MAC and the Unruh family have played a significant role in the development of Guerin Inc., which was established to construct facilities for a new Providence House for Children campus at Georgetown, Indiana. Providence House provides shelter and round-the-clock care in a group home setting for abused and/or neglected children and shelter, case management and counseling for families reuniting with children in foster care and families in danger of separation because they are homeless or live in hazardous, substandard housing. Guerin Inc. is also involved in innovative projects for elder citizens.
