Vertical MAC Construction timeline highlighting key milestones from 1980 to 2020 with milestone captions and framed photos.

Every Great Story Starts with a Foundation

Founded in 1980 by a husband-and-wife team, Victor and Jeannie Unruh, with a belief that hard work builds more than projects – it builds trust, loyalty, and longevity.

MAC started as a site development and excavation company serving Southern Indiana and the Louisville metropolitan area. From the beginning, Vic’s sharp attention to construction detail, coupled with Jeannie’s strength in finance and resource management, created a balance that fueled steady, sustainable growth. Together, they built MAC into a trusted name through diligence, accountability, and a relentless commitment to doing things right - and for the right reasons.

As projects grew in size and complexity, so did MAC. By reinvesting in equipment, training, technology, and manpower, the company expanded its capabilities from site work into full-scale heavy civil construction. Over time, MAC further diversified its services to include asphalt production and paving, mechanical systems, structural steel, alternate project delivery, and general contracting services, allowing the company to support a wider range of customers and project types.

That same commitment to progress guided the second generation of ownership forward. In 2000 and 2001, Travis and Chad Unruh joined the company after earning engineering degrees from Purdue University and gaining experience with outside companies. They started where every good construction leader should - in the field - gaining firsthand experience in the intricacies of civil construction and crew leadership. Today, they carry that practical knowledge and work ethic into every project, continuing the family legacy of integrity, craftsmanship, and leadership.

Now licensed in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, and West Virginia, MAC’s footprint continues to grow and diversify beyond the Southern Indiana and Louisville Metro region. Across this expanded territory, the company brings the same trusted approach and dedication to quality that has defined MAC since its founding.

At MAC Construction, we take pride in self-performing key portions of projects, from initial groundwork through the final layer of asphalt. Our Project Management team applies that same level of professionalism and accountability to all subcontracted work, ensuring every partner meets MAC’s standards on every job.

Travis Unruh | President

Travis Unruh joined MAC Construction full-time in 2000, beginning his career in the field before advancing into operational supervisory roles and ultimately assuming leadership over major operational divisions and estimating, where he continues to guide the company’s growth and performance as President and shares ownership of the company with his brother, Chad. Throughout his career, Travis has overseen significant site development projects, complex underground projects, roadway construction, and bridge work. In addition to his project leadership responsibilities, he oversees MAC’s maintenance and trucking operations, helping ensure the reliability, readiness, and efficiency of the company’s equipment and fleet. Travis earned a B.S. in Construction Engineering and Management from Purdue University. During his time there, he completed multiple internships and co-op programs with a large heavy civil engineering and construction firm, serving as an Assistant Superintendent. Outside of work, Travis values time with his wife and two children and stays active in the community, coaching and running a competitive travel softball team with his wife.

Chad Unruh | Chief Executive Officer

Chad Unruh has been employed full-time with MAC Construction since 2001, beginning his career in the field before advancing into operational leadership roles and ultimately assuming responsibility for major divisions of the company. In 2011, he was named Chief Executive Officer and today shares ownership of the company with his brother, Travis. Over the years, Chad has managed the construction and rehabilitation of major treatment plants, pump stations, asphalt production and paving operations, and complex site and utility infrastructure projects. He maintains direct oversight of MAC’s Asphalt Plant and remains deeply involved in day-to-day operations and estimating, while also leading the company’s administrative functions. Under Chad’s leadership, MAC has grown significantly in both project volume and the sophistication of its services. Chad earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Purdue University and gained valuable early experience through internships and professional roles at a large mechanical contracting firm. This background has been instrumental in supporting MAC Construction’s expansion into mechanical and structural construction services. Outside of work, Chad, his wife, and two children remain active in their church and community. He also enjoys spending time on the pickleball court and is always pursuing opportunities for personal growth and improvement.
